After a month of battling overgrown bushes, clearing trees, and wrangling utilities, we are finally ready to move onto the property. Wandering Acres is slowly becoming our Creekside hideaway in the mountains.
In this update, we’ve prepped our RV site, hauled in tons of gravel, built a farm fence with a gate, and laid down a driveway that’s saved our truck (and boots) from the mud. Plus, we got crafty with a DIY package drop-off box!
Here’s the latest on turning this raw land into our adventure basecamp for Wander4Adventure.
Preparing our RV Home Base
From day one, we planned to stay in our RV on Wandering Acres while building our dream home, and that meant getting the RV site ready. With utilities like septic, water, and power now in place (a huge win during our last update!), we focused on grading the site to make a flat, stable spot.

Then came the gravel—17 tons of it, dumped in a massive pile! We spread it by hand, shovels swinging and muscles screaming. Lesson learned: next time, we’re renting equipment! The result? A solid RV site where we parked our rig, complete with hookups. We even dusted off our patio furniture from storage for a cozy touch.

Rolling onto the property with our RV felt like such a win- this land is officially home base!
Establishing Access to Wandering Acres: Farm Fence and Gate
To protect the septic field along the driveway and give the entrance to Wandering Acres some structure, we built a farm fence and a sturdy gate. The septic field runs close to the edge of the driveway, so the fence keeps it safe from future traffic and projects. We chose a classic 3-rail wooden fence, for a charming rustic vibe. We’ll post updated pictures in the fall once the fence is ready for paint.

Installing the fence was a sweaty job—digging post holes, pouring concrete, and setting the gate in the summer heat. But seeing that gate swing open? Totally worth it. It not only secures the property but also helped us map out the driveway’s path. With the fence up, we could visualize how the driveway would curve through the meadow, setting us up for the next step.

Oh, and we got creative with project leftovers! Using spare fence posts and a piece of tin found on the property, we built a small package drop-off box with a tin roof. It’s perfect for deliveries at the front of the property. Stay tuned for the final painted version and a quick how-to!
No More Mud: Driveway Gravel Delivery
Say goodbye to getting stuck in the mud! We ordered another load of gravel—this time for the driveway. Watching those trucks roll in and dump a mountain of gravel was oddly satisfying. Spreading it was a whole lot easier this time, thanks to our new (to us) tractor. Talk about a lifesaver after our hand-shoveling fiasco with the RV site.

The before-and-after is night and day: from an overgrown, muddy mess, to a functional driveway. The creek sparkles nearby, and the meadow looks sharper with the drive cutting through. Wandering Acres is coming together!

What’s Next for Wandering Acres?
All of these steps: the RV site, fence, gate, and driveway are a huge step in our journey. Next, we’re creating a creek side campfire area, complete with fire ring, cute chairs, and string lights for cozy nights. Then we’re moving on to tackling the old rundown storage building to make it a working garden shed. The work continues, but it feels more like home every day.
