Wandering Acres land transformation update! In case you missed our introductory post, let’s catch you up. Our new property, Wandering Acres-half Mountain, half meadow, with a creek and a spring-fed pond—was a total jungle when we started. Bushes taller than us, trees where open pasture used to be, and poison ivy ready to ruin our day.
But we’re diving into the land transformation, and it’s been a blast! We’ve tackled permits, cleared most of the chaos, hooked up utilities, and dropped a shipping container for storage. Here’s the lowdown on turning this wild land into our adventure basecamp for Wander4Adventure.

Getting Official: Surveys and Permits
First things first, we had to get the boring (yet necessary) stuff out of the way: surveys and permits. We brought in surveyors to map out our acres, from the mountain’s rocky slopes to the meadow’s far edge. The survey gave us a clear picture of the land—super handy for planning.
Next came the big wins: septic system installed and approved, building permits secured for septic and electrical lines, and electric brought to the property. We also tested the water in the well, installed a new pump, and set the pressure tank.
Navigating permits was like solving a puzzle- lots of paperwork, site plan sketches, and meetings with inspectors. But checking those boxes felt like a victory. We’re now set to move forward with the fun stuff!
Taming the Chaos: Clearing the Land
When we say Wandering Acres was overgrown, we mean OVERGROWN. Years of vacancy turned what used to be lush pasture into a forest of invasive trees, poison ivy, and thorny vines as tall as us. Walking through was like bushwhacking without a trail.
Renting a brush cutter was a total game-changer. That beast sliced through the mess, letting us carve paths, measure for the future house and RV site, and finally see what we’re working with. We cleared out the small trees and prickly bushes, opening up the meadow and making the creek way easier to reach. We are so happy with the progress so far, check out some of the before and after photos.

Powering the Dream For Wandering Acres: Utilities Hooked Up
With the land looking less like a wilderness, we tackled utilities. Trenching for septic, water, and power was a gritty job—muddy boots, sore muscles, and a few spots that had us questioning our life choices. But seeing the septic system go in, electric lines hooked up, and the well pumping water? Totally worth it!

These utilities are the backbone for our RV site, where we’ll park our rig while building. Once that site’s ready, we’ll roll in and dive into bigger projects, like turning the old storage building into a garden shed and building a walking bridge over the creek. The land’s starting to feel like ours, one trench at a time.
Our Storage Solution: The Shipping Container
To keep our tools and gear safe and out of the weather, we had a shipping container delivered. We’ll most likely building something in the future, but this proved to be a quick and easy way to have temporary storage on the land. Clearing a flat spot for it in the pasture meant more brush cutting and leveling—not exactly a spa day, but worth it. Delivery day was a highlight, watching that massive container roll in and settle into its new location.
I’m not going to lie, it’s a little rough, with a few dents and some rust. But a fresh coat of paint and a few minor fixes will make it solid for temporary storage. Here’s a sneak peak, but stay tuned for this upcoming project- the shipping container makeover!

What’s Next for Wandering Acres?
These first steps- permits, clearing, utilities, and the container, are just the first steps for the Wandering Acres land transformation. We’re excited to prep the RV site, fix up the shed for our garden plans, and tackle that creek bridge. It’s been muddy, sweaty work, but every day brings us closer to our adventure basecamp.
