Visit Historic St. Augustine: Top Things To Do

  • by

If you only have a weekend to visit St. Augustine, America’s oldest city, there are plenty of activities and sights to fill your itinerary. From historic sites to charming local experiences, here’s a guide to make the most of your weekend.

Early History of St. Augustine

Start your journey with a dive into history at Castillo De San Marcos National Monument. This impressive 17th-century Spanish fortress is built from sturdy coquina stone. Take a self-guided tour that takes you back in time to when Spanish soldiers defended the area.

Don’t miss the cannon firing demonstrations, which provide a glimpse into the military practices of the past. This was a huge hit with the kids!

Next, head to Fort Matanzas National Monument, a smaller but equally fascinating historic site that holds tales of battles and sieges. You can reach this fort by taking a free boat tour across the Matanzas River. The ride offers scenic views of the surrounding waterways as you make your way to the Fort. Check the National Park Service website for boat schedules, as they’re weather-dependent.

In the fort, wander through soldiers’ quarters, the powder magazine, and officer’s quarters. For a little more adventure, climb the narrow ladder to the top for epic views from the observation deck.

While you wait for the ferry, take part in one of the many ranger programs. We enjoyed a ranger led tour along the Marsh Trail, where we learned about the marsh, wetlands, and local wildlife that call this park home.

If you have time for an extra stop, the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum is also a wonderful place to visit.

St. Augustine Historic District

Exploring the city on foot is a must in St. Augustine. There are numerous tours available that highlight the rich history and beautiful architecture of the area. However, for a more personalized experience, opt for a self-guided walking tour.

Start at the historic district, where cobblestone streets and 18th-century architecture transport you back in time. Stroll along the streets as you enjoy historic churches, museums, gardens, and beautiful Flagler College. We opted for this approach, taking in the sights at our own pace.

Shopping and Entertainment on St. George Street

St. George Street is the heart of St. Augustine’s shopping and dining scene. Spend an afternoon strolling along this pedestrian-only street, where you’ll find a variety of boutiques, galleries, and eateries.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the charming cafes or popular seafood restaurants. Then browse the quirky shops selling everything from handmade jewelry to pirate-themed souvenirs.

St. Augustine Nights of Lights

If you’re visiting between mid-November and mid-January, don’t miss the Nights of Lights festival. This free event transforms St. Augustine into a winter wonderland with millions of twinkling lights adorning buildings, gardens, and boats in the marina.

Stroll the historic district at dusk to see the Bridge of Lions and Plaza de la Constitución all lit up. Or book a boat tour for a waterside view of the festivities. Either way is a magical way to enjoy the festive atmosphere as you wrap up the day.
