Grand Teton National Park: One Day Itinerary

  • by

Planning a quick trip to Grand Teton National Park? This one-day itinerary highlights the must-see sights and stops in this breathtaking Wyoming destination, perfect for travelers short on time.

Grand Teton is located only a few miles south of Yellowstone National Park. There is even an entrance between the two parks on the north end of Grand Teton. If you do not have an Interagency Pass or America the Beautiful Park Pass, expect to pay entrance fees for both parks when traveling through.

The areas around the Grand Teton mountain range and its lakes were established as a national park in 1929 in order to protect the land from commercial exploitation. The protected area was extended into the surrounding valley in 1950.National Park Foundation

Let’s spend 1 day in Grand Teton National Park!

1. Craig Thomas Discover and Visitor Center

Start your day at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center. This fantastic visitor center offers engaging exhibits on the park’s history, culture, and wildlife, making it an ideal first stop. Pick up maps, backpacking or boat permits, and explore the junior ranger program.

The center also features a park store with snacks, souvenirs, and a National Park Passport stamp station. Restrooms and a park movie are available for visitors. Arrive early to avoid crowds and gather tips from rangers for your one-day adventure.

2. Grand Teton Scenic Drives

Maximize your time with a scenic drive along Teton Park Road and Highway 191 loop, offering stunning views of the Teton Range and tons of wildlife spotting opportunities.

Scenic Park Loop: From the Visitor Center, take the park loop going north on Highway 191. This gives you access to the famous Mormon Row, the very scenic Schwabacher Landing, as well as wildlife viewing opportunities along the Snake River and its surrounding meadows.

Teton Park Road: Drive south for the best views of the Teton Range on your way back down the loop. It also provides easier access to the scenic overviews, parking areas, and many of the trailheads that are on the right side of the road.

You’ll find additional scenic drives at Jenny Lake, Moose-Wilson Road, and Signal Mountain Summit Road, each offering unique perspectives of the park.

3. Mormon Row Historic District

Explore the Mormon Row Historic District and learn about the lives of early settlers. A few buildings from the original homesteads still stand. Including the iconic Chambers Homestead and the famous Moulton Barns, set against the dramatic Teton Range as a stunning backdrop.

4. Schwabacher Landing

Schwabacher Landing is a photographer’s dream. It was once used to launch boats down the Snake River. The river has since changed course and has left behind a serene pond surrounded by lush grasses, cottonwoods, and spruce trees.

On a calm day, you can see a picturesque reflection of the Teton Range in the still waters. Enjoy a short walk along the riverside trail, relax with a picnic, and take advantage of the unique landscape for stunning photography.

5. More Grand Teton Stops: Jenny Lake, Signal Mountain, and Jackson Lake

These are all beautiful scenic sights along Teton Park Road. Each stop has a lodge, parking, and amenities. They are very popular stops, so if you only have a day to visit the park, we recommend choosing at least one of them to explore.

Jenny Lake: One of the most popular destinations to visit in Grand Teton. It’s a beautiful lake at the base of the Teton Range. You can swim, paddle, kayak, boat, or hike on one of the many popular trails. Even with the large parking lot, it fills up quickly, especially during the summer.

Signal Mountain: Drive to the summit for panoramic views of the Tetons and Jackson Hole.

Jackson Lake: Ideal for boating, wildlife viewing, or relaxing at the lodge.
