State and National Parks
Congaree National Park
Just a short drive from downtown Columbia, is Congaree National Park. This small, uncrowded park has an ancient floodplain with some of the tallest trees on the East Coast. Start at the visitor center (with restrooms!) and then hit the 2.4-mile Boardwalk Loop Trail. It’s an easy, wheelchair and stroller accessible path through towering bald cypress trees.
Pro tip: pack bug spray in spring and summer—those mosquitoes don’t mess around!

For adventurers, there are over 25 miles of primitive trails for backcountry hiking. Want to explore by water? The Cedar Creek Paddle Trail is perfect for canoeing or kayaking through the serene floodplain.
Sesquicentennial State Park
Sesquicentennial State Park (AKA “Sesqui) is a wonderful nature escape right in the heart of town. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park has a splash pad, dog park, picnic shelters, and tent/RV camping. The Sandhills Hiking Trail, a 2-mile loop, is perfect for an easy hike. While the 6-mile Sesqui Mountain Bike Trail is a hit with cyclists.

Bring a kayak or canoe to paddle along the beautiful 30-acre lake. The park also offers pedal boat rentals. We love visiting in the fall for family picnics by the lake, surrounded by vibrant foliage.
Dreher Island State Park
Located 30 miles from Columbia on Lake Murray, Dreher Island State Park spans three islands and offers stunning water views. Hike the Billy Dreher Nature Trail, named after the park’s namesake. Anglers can fish for striped and large-mouth bass along the shoreline. The park also has a boat launch and marina for easy access to the lake.

There are picnic shelters and playgrounds throughout the park for kids and families. Camper cabins, lakeside villas, and tent/RV sites make for a great weekend getaway. Dreher Island is busiest during the summer, but it’s a gorgeous place to visit year-round.
